I guess Telligent is not free for community any more

After some careful deliberation I decided to put www.sfspug.com on Telligent’s community server.  I knew they were coming out with a new version soon and I thought it would be good because then I could see the older version and migrate to the newer one.  What I hadn’t counted on was that they wouldn’t have a new community server community edition.  Well I went to the site and I couldn’t find it.  So I went to the Tellignet’s contact page and I indicated that I couldn’t find the free version like I had before.  Below is the email dialog where they answered and said they don’t have a free version.  I asked them how much it is and they didn’t respond at all.  My feeling is when you ask, “How much is it” and they can’t answer that in a short simple sentence then there’s a problem:

How much is it?

Dear Stacy,

Thank you for your request sent into our sales team. Unfortunately, we no longer offer a free version of our software.

The only option we have at this point is an Enterprise class license.

Please let me know if I can do anything for you or can help in any way.

Thank you, Stacy!

Thanks,

I still haven’t received an answer and the price isn’t listed on their website.  They clearly have something called community – I don’t know what that is now that Grant has indicated there’s only enterprise.  Just how hard does one have to beg to buy something?

So Grant called me on the phone and we spoke.  My take away is that Telligent is just morphing.  Since may I think they've gotten a new CEO Patrick Brandt and with him a whole new game plan.  Grant threw out a number but I'm not sure that he wanted me putting it out there.  I can tell you that I work with enterprise software all the time and it's what you might expect to pay for intranet, cms or a finacial package.

Grant appologized for not getting back to me.  He indicated that he likes to get back to people in 24 hours and the facts of life dictate that he needs to concentrate on areas that make him money, even though he did want to reach out to me sooner.  I can't say I blame him, just would have been nice to hear from him.  I mean asked the popfly people if I could snag their code and the wrote me back right away quick and politly told me in so many words, no.

Apparently people were using Community Server for commercial purposes.  My answer would be to thrash those people and turn them into sales.  Instead, with this new version, they aren't letting the bits get out there at all, so they don't ahve this piracy situation arise again.  He did mention that they might be looking at a small business edition.  I imagine that would still be too much for my user group.

Alternaitives might be www.ning.com, www.sueetie.org, or even office online.

    Stacy,

We are still providing complimentary copies for Microsoft User Groups. Please contact me and we can get this taken care of.

    Thanks,
    Rob
